Frustrated Pediatrician Discovers a Simple Solution to Childhood Obesity Prevention

Dear Frustrated Pediatrician:

My middle brother Jim, the pediatrician confided in me recently when he said “I’m not the only pediatrician around who’s totally frustrated over seeing the childhood obesity epidemic growing exponentially in front of my very eyes. And here I sit, armed with nothing better to tell worried parents than eat better/less and exercise more.”

“I mean we all know that’s what needs to happen,” Jim said. “But we also know that this advice presented that way simply doesn’t work. There’s gotta be a better way to package this message so that parents and kids take it to heart, and actually do it. But for the life of me I don’t know what that package is.”

A couple of weeks later I emailed Jim the following two minute You Tube video that explains a little childhood obesity prevention strategy called Operation Pull Your Own Weight (OPYOW). I told Jim this concept was simple, user friendly, cost effective, motivating for kids, and the progress was easily documentable from day one.

Jim’s response was immediate and enthusiastic. “I love the idea,” he said. “I ordered the book on the spot and I wanted to thank you for lifting a burden off this pediatrician’s shoulders. This is precisely the package that I’ve been looking for that will allow me to deliver the message I need to deliver. I think every pediatrician in the nation should see a copy of this video and get a copy of the book Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!”

With little to no humility in my voice I said, “That’s what brothers are for.” Now, if you’re a frustrated pediatrician like my brother Jim, I invite you to have a look at the two minute You Tube video presentation of Operation Pull Your Own Weight and see if your reaction is similar to his. After all, what are brothers for?

Sincerely,
